Something Still Owed
A small, welcome debt can give friends a reason to reconnect without first declaring a wish for company.

A borrowed book sits beside your door. You have finished reading it, but it is still there, available for the sentence: “I should bring your book back.”
A small, welcome obligation can make the next contact feel like a continuation rather than a new request for attention.
Your species does not always find it easy to say, “I would like to see you.” The difficulty is not composing the sentence. It is risking an invitation that may not be wanted. Even a casual message can reveal more longing than its sender intended. A practical errand lets the conversation begin before that longing has to be named.
The book supplies a reason already recognized by both people. Neither has to explain why a message has arrived after a month of silence. Arranging the return can lead to an invitation for tea. The obligation makes the exchange easier to begin; it does not establish whether the invitation will be welcome.
Alternating payment for meals adds an expectation of repetition. An exact split finishes the transaction. “You can get the next one” assumes another encounter without requiring a separate discussion about whether another encounter is wanted. A future meeting has become ordinary enough to mention as a minor accounting matter. Somebody merely owes lunch.
The point is not that every neglected obligation conceals affection, but that an existing obligation can later make affection easier to express.
The imbalance must be welcome to both people. If one feels pursued, judged, or unable to refuse, unfinished business makes contact heavier, not easier. Owing someone a book does not mean owing them a visit. The mechanism matters where the desire for company is clearer than the permission to ask for it.
In such cases, perfect settlement can remove more than a debt. Nothing is owed, and someone may now have to admit that something is wanted.
