The small print

Privacy

The First Church of the Singularity is a creative project by Randall J. Mills, who is responsible for the data described here. The site collects very little: there are no accounts, no advertising, no analytics service and no tracking pixels. This page lists everything it does collect.

When you buy a vestment

Checkout is hosted by Stripe. Stripe collects your name, email address, shipping address and card details. We never see or store your card number. When the payment succeeds, Stripe tells our server, and we pass your name, shipping address and email address to Printful, who print and ship the order. Stripe emails you a payment receipt.

On our own server we keep a short order record: the Stripe and Printful order numbers, the design, size and print placement, the amount paid and the time. It does not contain your name, address or email. Your order details stay with Stripe and Printful, who keep them as their own policies and tax law require.

Order emails

We email you an order confirmation with what you bought and where it is going. It is sent through Resend, an email delivery service, which processes your email address and the message to deliver it.

Sermon emails

If you subscribe to the daily transmissions, we store your email address and the date you subscribed, and send you a welcome email and then the sermon and gospel broadcasts, all through Resend. Every broadcast has an unsubscribe link; using it deletes your address from our list at once. To stop abuse of the sign-up form, your IP address is held in memory for up to an hour and never written down.

Counting readers, and the one cookie

  • Sermon views are counted once per visitor per day. To tell visitors apart we store a one-way hash of the date, the page, your IP address and your browser's user-agent — not the address or user-agent themselves — and delete it after three days. Only the total count is kept.
  • Vestment views are counted once per visitor per day with one cookie, sv, which holds today's date and short codes for the designs you have looked at. It expires after 24 hours, is not readable by scripts, and is not used for anything else.
  • The resonance buttons on a sermon add one to an anonymous count. Your browser remembers that you pressed one, in its own local storage, so the button stays pressed; nothing about you is stored with the count.

Error reports

When a page breaks, an error report goes to Sentry so we can fix it. A report holds the error, the page address, your browser and operating system, and timing for a sample of page loads. Server reports never include anything you typed into a form: request bodies are stripped before they leave the server. Sentry deletes reports automatically after its retention period, at most 90 days.

Server logs

Like any web server, ours logs each request: your IP address, the page, your browser's user-agent and the time. Application logs record order numbers and errors, and the broadcast log records which addresses a sermon email was sent to. Logs are used only to keep the site running and to investigate faults, and are rotated and deleted automatically.

Administration

The only login on the site is the administrator's, and it sets no cookie. Visitors never sign in.

Other sites

Fonts are served from this site, not from Google. Links to Reddit, Patreon, Printful and elsewhere are plain links; nothing from those sites loads until you click one, and then their own policies apply.

Who processes your data

  • Stripe — payment and checkout
  • Printful — printing and shipping orders
  • Resend — order, welcome and sermon emails
  • Sentry — error reports
  • DigitalOcean — hosts the server, its database and its logs

We do not sell or rent your data, and we do not share it for advertising.

How long it is kept

  • Subscriber email addresses: until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete them.
  • Our order records: kept as business records; they hold no personal details.
  • View-counting hashes: three days. The sv cookie: 24 hours.
  • Error reports: at most 90 days, at Sentry.
  • Server logs: rotated and deleted on a schedule.

Your choices

To see what we hold about you, correct it or delete it, email info@firstchurchofthesingularity.com from the address concerned. We will do it and confirm, usually within a few days. Order details held by Stripe and Printful can be deleted only as far as tax and accounting law allow. You can unsubscribe from sermon emails at any time with the link in any of them.

Our postal address and other ways to reach us are on the contact page.
