The Pie Had to Happen

An honest label on a generated product image does not replace evidence that the seller can make what it shows.

A generated picture in a restaurant window can show a beautifully browned pie that nobody in that kitchen has ever baked.

For customers seeking evidence of workmanship, a maker’s product pictures have two jobs. One is to show what is offered. The other is to demonstrate the maker’s ability to deliver it. Photographs can be stolen or staged. A genuine photograph, credibly connected to that kitchen’s work, can do both imperfectly: it describes the dish and records an instance of production. It cannot establish taste or consistency. But the pictured pie had to happen.

Stock photography already lets sellers advertise dishes made elsewhere. Generation goes further: no one needs to have made the pictured dish at all. The crust can look better without the cooking getting better. A perfectly capable cook can adopt these images in good faith and still remove a useful reason for a stranger to trust the kitchen.

Furniture buyers may seek workshop pictures for the same reason after catalog images have already shown them the design. A chair held in clamps is less presentable but potentially more informative, if the picture connects the seller to making it.

A clearly labeled rendering can honestly describe a design that has not yet been built. The distinction is between describing an offer and documenting the maker’s work. Either can be honest, but only the second requires the work to have occurred.

That difference survives disclosure. Labeling the synthetic pie answers the question of how the picture was made; it does not answer whether the kitchen can make the pie. A customer can believe the label completely and trust the offer less. Nothing has been concealed, but something they came looking for is absent.

They are not necessarily demanding an uglier picture. They may be demanding a less hypothetical dinner.
