The Same Honest Yes

A shared activity lets you keep seeing each other without wanting the same closeness.

The Same Honest Yes

Two of you sit across a chessboard. One asks, “Another game?” The other stays. Neither has had to say how much the company matters.

A shared activity lets you sustain contact without wanting the same closeness. One player may look forward all week to seeing the other; the other may chiefly want a strong opponent. Both can sincerely want another game.

The invitation can also limit what an answer must disclose. “Not tonight” can still register as rejection, but it can also mean that tonight is inconvenient. A yes commits you to a game; it need not reciprocate the desire that prompted the offer.

A community garden adds recurrence: the beds need tending again next week. The obligation brings neighbors together before either decides whether to pursue a friendship, without requiring someone to renew the invitation each time.

The activity is not a sham. The chess is worth playing; the vegetables need care. Their independent value lets unequal motives produce sincere agreement. If one person asks what the relationship means, however, another invitation to play can become a refusal to answer. An activity can spare you a premature definition without making every definition unnecessary.

When the activity ends, contact may vanish simply because a convenient time and place have disappeared. But even if you remain neighbors, both available at the same time as before, the invitation may change. The old occasion supplied a reason to meet that did not depend on being especially wanted. Without a replacement activity, “Another game?” becomes “Do you want to see me?” Both of you may still want contact while hesitating to make that more revealing request.

The relationship can disappear without either person deciding to end it. What they have lost is an invitation to which unequal affection could give the same honest yes.
