What the Favor Authorizes

A giver can acknowledge every repayment while keeping the power to decide that none of it earns you the right to refuse.

What the Favor Authorizes

A parent lends you the deposit on an apartment. You return every cent. Years later, when you choose a partner they dislike, the deposit returns to the conversation.

A giver can acknowledge everything you have done in return and still claim sole authority over what it is worth. Your visits, practical help, and years of loyalty need not be denied. They can all be judged insufficient to justify refusing today’s demand. The decisive privilege is not remembering the favor. It is deciding what the favor now authorizes.

The judgment becomes leverage when refusal can cost you your standing in the family. Relatives need not believe you still owe money; they need only accept that a grateful child would comply. Explain your repayment, and you risk being called calculating as well as ungrateful. The parent’s help becomes evidence of generosity. Mentioning yours is treated as evidence that your gratitude is conditional.

The original kindness need not have been a trap. Someone can give generously and discover years later that invoking the gift succeeds where their reasons fail.

Yet much of your intimacy depends on giving before you know what the other person can return. Relationships need room for unequal contributions, long delays, and help that will never be returned. Insisting on a final settlement can itself be a way of ending the bond. An obligation does not become coercive merely because its end cannot be specified.

What matters is whether both of you have a say in what the obligation permits. No improvement in arithmetic can resolve a claim to exclusive authority. A relationship can remain open without every decision remaining available as payment.

When only the giver can set the terms, the balance can be calculated backward: first comes the demand, then the discovery that you still owe enough to meet it.
