Your Favorite, Apparently

When agreement is mistaken for liking, the same choice returns—and your next agreement is counted as proof.

Your Favorite, Apparently

Your friends book the same restaurant again, this time as a kindness to you. On the first visit, you agreed because it was close to someone else’s station. By the fourth, the group remembers it as your favorite.

When your compromises are remembered as preferences, each concession helps justify the next one.

The accepted option is public. The alternative you surrendered may never have been spoken. Even when you explain the reason, it is easier to remember where everyone ate than whose inconvenience decided the matter. “You were willing to go” becomes “you like going.” Your supposed liking then counts as a reason to return. The next agreement looks like fresh confirmation, though that belief helped put the same choice in front of you.

Company is something you can genuinely prefer. You may want this meal with these people more than your favorite meal alone. Returning with them may honor that preference. The group can choose the right restaurant while being wrong about your taste: a preference for the arrangement is not necessarily a preference for the restaurant itself.

A viewing log can record the program without recording the accommodation. The series you watched because someone beside you loved it can become evidence for what to recommend when you are alone. Ten evenings of viewing are reasonable evidence of interest, but they cannot by themselves separate interest in the program from interest in sharing it with someone.

The social cost appears when you finally decline. Others may hear a reversal where you intended a clarification. They have several evenings of apparently consistent evidence; you have several evenings of making room for someone else. Your correction can sound like ingratitude to people who thought they were being kind.

You are asked why you have changed when you have only stopped making the same concession.
