Before Anyone Has to Ask
Shared routines let acquaintances meet again without making each conversation earn the next.

At a school gate, two parents can recognize each other’s coats for weeks before learning each other’s names. Their paths cross because the children keep the same hours.
A common timetable supplies an overlooked freedom: the next meeting need not be earned by the previous one. Individually flexible schedules can make friendship harder to begin by removing repeated encounters nobody has to arrange.
Early interest is often too weak to support an invitation. You may not yet know whether you like this person, whether they like you, or whether yesterday’s pleasant exchange was a fluke. An invitation is not just a scheduling tool; it is a small declaration of preference. Repetition allows those questions to remain unsettled while more evidence arrives. A distracted afternoon need not be read as rejection. The next encounter already has a reason to happen.
Leaving a workplace can remove shared concerns as well as shared hours. But even colleagues with plenty left to discuss can keep each other’s contact details and gradually lose regular contact. Someone must now propose an occasion and negotiate a time. Two people can welcome an encounter without either quite wanting to organize one. The difficulty of arranging coffee is not a reliable measure of what the conversation would mean.
This change favors relationships already strong enough to generate plans, and people comfortable making the first proposal. It is harder on the acquaintance who might have become a friend after ten more ordinary encounters.
Flexibility can make room for relationships crowded out by work or caregiving, and for recurring gatherings people choose for themselves. These can supply continuity without requiring attendance. Compulsory proximity offers no guarantee of trust; the useful ingredient is dependable return, not obligation.
The distinction is between time available for friendship and encounters available before friendship exists.
