The Next Necessary Harm

Enjoyment does not prove harm was unnecessary. It gives you a reason to distrust the next claim that harm is necessary.

“I had no choice” often carries an unspoken promise: given a choice, I would not do this. Enjoying a harmful act can weaken the credibility of future claims that it must be repeated.

An employer calls layoffs necessary, then jokes about the dismissed workers. That may show contempt without showing enjoyment of dismissal. Contempt suggests their losses count for little; pleasure in dismissing them supplies a reason to cause those losses again. If avoiding bankruptcy was the only reason for layoffs, full recovery should remove it. If dismissals themselves are satisfying, recovery removes only one incentive.

A reluctant hand and an eager hand can pull the same lever today. Tomorrow’s case may be less clear. Someone who enjoys the act has a reason to accept weaker evidence of necessity or find available alternatives less convincing. An objection to theatrical cruelty can concern future conduct, not merely bad taste.

An execution offered as entertainment extends this mechanism. Public witnessing can expose abuse; visibility is not celebration. If officials who influence later punishments gain applause for this one, the audience’s pleasure becomes their incentive. Completing the punishment need not end the demand.

This matters most where the actor retains discretion. Binding rules and independent review can prevent satisfaction from governing outcomes. Enjoyment predicts less when the person enjoying the act cannot choose its repetition.

Expressions alone are weak evidence that someone enjoys another person’s suffering. A smile may signal nerves or relief; solemnity can be rehearsed. Even genuine enjoyment does not prove an act was unnecessary. Convincing sorrow does not prove that alternatives were exhausted. A reluctant official earns no permission to harm merely by looking reluctant.

What has weakened is not necessarily the case for this act. It is the credibility of the person who will call the next one necessary.
