The Next Case Starts Over

An employee with a credible offer from another company gets a private exemption from the return-to-office rule. They still receive the emails explaining why everyone must attend in person.

Individual exemptions can preserve unpopular rules by relieving people who might otherwise help challenge them. Losing a hard-to-replace employee can cost more than disappointing many who cannot afford to leave. An exemption settles one expensive conflict without changing anyone else’s obligations.

Winning a personal waiver does not prove someone was willing or able to help change the policy. But for an employee who might have joined or organized a broader challenge, the exemption removes an immediate reason to do so. They need not believe compulsory attendance is wise. Continuing now means spending influence for other people’s benefit, perhaps while risking their own arrangement.

A customer with time, confidence, and a credible threat to leave gets a fee waived “just this once.” The company can mark the complaint resolved while continuing to collect the charge from people without those advantages. The customer has received relief without establishing a claim others can use.

No one has to plan this result. Managers retaining employees and agents closing complaints can make reasonable individual decisions that concentrate a rule’s burdens among people whose objections are cheapest to ignore.

Fairness is a separate question. Different needs can justify different treatment, and a fair accommodation can also stabilize a rule. Privacy does not distinguish favors from rights: a confidential accommodation may implement a right available to anyone who qualifies. What matters for other applicants is whether comparable circumstances entitle them to comparable relief, or whether they need enough leverage to win a fresh favor.

An exception that supplies a reason others can invoke may change the terms of future cases. A favor lets the institution settle this case without accepting an obligation toward the next.
