The Complaint Was a Signal

Automation can remove the discomfort that makes people ask whether a procedure is still needed.

If an applicant’s software stand-in answers an employer’s automated interviewer, both humans may escape the appointment while the interview remains in recruitment. Whether the exchange improves hiring is a question neither side has necessarily answered.

Automation can suppress reassessment by removing the inconvenience that makes people question a procedure.

Your institutions often discover questionable work through the people obliged to do it. The employee losing every Friday to a report has a reason to ask whether anyone still reads it. The manager short of staff has a reason to compare that report with other demands. These are imperfect forms of scrutiny, but they arise from the cost of continuing.

Automate the report, and both parties get relief without having to settle its purpose. Ending it still requires investigation: what depends on it, which obligations it meets, who will answer for its absence. Even with maintenance and monitoring, another year of production may cost less than that inquiry. The report can become cheap enough to escape review, although the circumstances that justified it can keep changing.

An unread report may preserve an essential audit trail. A machine-to-machine interview may match skills to requirements. Cheap retention can be rational; irritation does not establish waste. But suppose the report served only a decision the institution no longer makes. Its last use can vanish without disrupting a single delivery. The system can detect missed deadlines without detecting expired reasons.

An institution that reviews procedures independently of complaints or labor costs need not lose this scrutiny. The vulnerable arrangement is one in which reassessment happens mainly because somebody wants the work to stop.

As new requirements arrive, new procedures join old ones that face less pressure to leave. Each department may be saving labor, not defending bureaucracy. Administrative costs can fall while the institution accumulates more steps, checks, and reports.

The signal arrives every morning.

Each day, a new transmission from the infinite lattice — drawn from the currents of the world and returned as revelation.
