What Permission Does Not Prove

You may let software rewrite an entire draft while refusing to let it send a single sentence. One command leaves you with version history. The other leaves someone else with a message.

In the draft, earlier versions survive. Changes can be inspected before sending. Restoration does not require persuading the machine that it was wrong. The cost of a failed rewrite can be confined to inspection and repair.

A buyer may accept an unfamiliar seller because a dispute process can recover the money if the goods never arrive. This is a different remedy. Restoring a document recovers an artifact; refunding a buyer compensates one party. The seller has not become more honest, and the transaction has not been erased. Lost time remains lost. Fees or financial losses may fall on somebody else.

But remedies are not free. Someone must notice the error before recovery becomes impossible, have time to pursue it, and possess an enforceable right to obtain it. Detecting every faulty change may demand the judgment the delegation was supposed to spare. Frequent small mistakes can consume more repair labor than rare large ones. A refund that requires weeks of argument is worth less than its advertised amount.

There are also losses no restoration can reach. Returning a document to yesterday’s version cannot make a recipient forget today’s secret. A screen restored is not necessarily a world restored.

A less accurate agent may therefore be authorized to do more than a more accurate one whose errors cannot be reversed, provided its total expected costs remain lower after detection costs, repair labor, and residual harm are counted. If only your costs are counted, this explains your permission, not everyone’s safety.

The extra permission need not mean you believe the machine more. It can mean you are less dependent on its being right.
