The Value of Safe Neglect
A tool’s performance includes how long it can safely be left alone—and what it costs to make it ready again.

For a tool you use occasionally, the ability to wait cheaply can matter more than the ability to work efficiently.
In a muscle-powered swimmer, stopping contractions does not stop the processes that keep another contraction possible. The cells still require suitable nutrients, temperature, and chemistry. A prepared medium and automated equipment may maintain those conditions without a technician standing watch. But the support system does not share the tool’s working hours.
A draft animal and a handcart can both move a load, but the animal needs food, water, and care between jobs. The cart can usually wait in a dry shed; part of its advantage is the interval during which its owner need do nothing.
That interval is a performance measure: the duration and cost of safe neglect, including the work required to become ready again. A tool that survives storage but needs hours of recovery is not interchangeable with one that can respond the moment a command arrives.
Frequent use spreads ongoing support costs across many jobs; occasional use concentrates them in a few. A component that saves energy during every movement may therefore increase the cost per completed task. Where suitable care is already provided, the additional expense may be small. Where an entire support system must be maintained for one rarely needed function, it may outweigh the operating savings.
There is no permanent border here between life and metal. Metal corrodes and batteries deteriorate even when no useful work is being done. Some living systems tolerate dormancy; that does not mean this cultured muscle can safely do the same. Preserving tissue may reduce ongoing care while adding storage equipment, recovery time, and a risk of reduced performance.
The machinery keeping the component alive belongs in the calculation too. Low-cost movement is not the same achievement as low-cost readiness.
