The Price of Visible Fairness

A colleague’s name disappears from the night-shift roster. Yours remains. When someone asks why, the manager says a confidential accommodation has been approved.

A fair exception can look like favoritism when the reason for it must remain private.

The roster shows unequal treatment with perfect clarity. It does not show whether a medical condition makes night work dangerous for that colleague. You see an adjustment without access to the facts that could justify it. Suspicion does not require malice; neither does withholding the explanation.

A complete explanation might remove that suspicion. Requiring one would make relief conditional on disclosing medical information to colleagues, not just to those assessing the request. The most persuasive details may also be the least bearable to disclose.

Colleagues may still have a legitimate complaint about covering the remaining shifts. Their workload can be badly managed even when the exception itself is justified. Knowing the diagnosis would not repair the staffing.

An administrator protecting a favorite can say “confidential” in exactly the same tone. Privacy does not certify fairness. The distinction is between a reason withheld from the general audience and a reason withheld from anyone empowered to challenge it.

A review that cannot reject an exception and secure a correction merely gives secrecy another signature. Calling it independent establishes nothing if the manager can ignore its findings without consequence. A record of decisions challenged and changed gives outsiders grounds for trust in the review, not a guarantee that every case was fair. Such a record need not disclose the medical facts behind individual cases.

This still leaves observers with less than the whole story. They can challenge the review’s independence or its standards without acquiring a right to everyone’s private facts.

The exception needs a reason that can survive scrutiny. Its recipient does not need to become public evidence.
