When Stopping Becomes Personal

A practical obstacle can supply a reason to stop that does not depend on anyone respecting your fatigue or priorities. Remove it, and stopping becomes easier to interpret as a judgment about the person asking you to continue. Those with less bargaining power are most exposed: each small request can make them defend needs the obstruction once allowed them to leave unspoken.

For work once confined to an office, remote access offers freedom from a fixed workplace. It also makes leaving the building a weaker explanation for leaving the work. A supervisor need not formally extend the working day. An evening request to “check one thing” can require you to defend a boundary that leaving the workplace once helped establish. Explaining why you cannot grant the request may take longer than complying. Rest has acquired an application process.

Instant messaging changes the meaning of delay. A letter could spend days in transit without revealing anything about the recipient’s willingness to answer. When delivery is immediate and visible, transit stops being a plausible explanation. The system records that contact was possible, not that attention was available. Yet the first fact can be used to presume the second. A late reply becomes easier to read as evidence of how much the sender matters, rather than how much else the recipient is doing.

Those inconveniences also excluded people. Remote access can make employment possible for someone a fixed workplace shuts out. Distance can deny wanted company as easily as it protects solitude. The protection supplied by a limit is accidental and uneven, not proof of its goodness. The same worker can gain access to a job and lose an accepted reason for being unavailable.

The obstacle once absorbed some of the blame for stopping. Its removal makes that blame easier to attach to you.
