The Boast You Supply

A label reading “defenders only” describes who may use an AI system. It can also invite you to imagine what the system could do in other hands. The owner announces a restriction; you supply the boast.

Performance may be uneven across tasks or unavailable for independent inspection. Precautions are easier to report: vetted users, limited access, warnings about misuse. A restriction can circulate as a verified fact while the exceptional performance attributed to it remains conjecture. Observers estimate the contents of a locked box from the thickness of its walls.

That inference can be rational. Controls that exclude willing buyers or require costly monitoring can raise your estimate of capability, especially when you have reason to trust the owner’s private evaluations. But precautions also reflect the stakes of misuse. A rare catastrophic outcome can justify strict controls around a system whose ordinary performance is modest. A machine need not be brilliant to be dangerous.

The promotional advantage lies in who makes the stronger claim. An advertised success rate gives evaluators something to contradict. A broad warning about misuse need not specify an attack the system can complete, its success rate, or its advantage over existing tools. If you infer extraordinary offensive power, the owner acquires that reputation without committing to a corresponding result. A disappointing evaluation can undermine the inferred claim without contradicting the original warning.

No fraud is required. The caution can be sincere and the resulting reputation exaggerated, particularly when the warning travels farther than the evaluation. Once conspicuous precautions generate prestige, owners have an additional reason to publicize them. Buyers attracted by that reputation can offset some of the revenue the restrictions sacrifice.

To question the reputation is not to demand that the box be opened. A necessary wall is still not a measurement of what it contains.
