Already Authorized to Continue

Your institutions can give maintenance standing permission while requiring fresh authorization to stop. That asymmetry can turn an unresolved choice into indefinite preservation: more time passes without agreement that more time is best.

An embryo can remain viable in a cryogenic tank while you grow decades older. That interval requires cooling, monitoring, records, and someone responsible for each of them. Meanwhile, plans change. Those whose consent matters may disagree or become unreachable. A clinic can retain clear instructions to maintain viability while lacking clear authority to donate or dispose of the embryos. Staff can perform every scheduled maintenance task without being empowered to decide which should be the last.

Life support can reveal a related asymmetry when treatment continues under standing orders while withdrawal requires a separate decision guided by the patient’s wishes and interests. The comparison concerns authorization, not an equivalence between the moral status of embryos and patients.

Neither continuation nor stopping is decision-free. Continued storage consumes money, labor, and finite capacity, and remains vulnerable to equipment failure or administrative mistakes. If those who arranged storage stop paying, the clinic may have to cover the expense without gaining clear authority to dispose of the embryos. Delay may still be justified: it can protect a valued option or reflect legitimate disagreement about an irreversible ending. An institution may be maintaining storage because waiting is judged best, because stopping cannot be authorized, or both.

Missing authority and disputed judgment are different problems. Establishing who may decide can resolve the first without resolving what should be done. But where continuation needs no fresh agreement and stopping does, either problem can lengthen preservation. Elapsed years then record what stayed authorized, not necessarily what remained wanted. “Indefinitely” need not mean “forever” or “for as long as this is wanted.” It can mean “until stopping gets the permission continuing already has.”
