The Fastest Judge Becomes the Customer

Fast machine verdicts can shape products more strongly than your slower experience of using them.

A restaurant menu presents a flawless sandwich: lacquered bread, aligned lettuce, cheese stretching with structural confidence. Yet the image can produce less appetite than suspicion. The relevant distinction is not whether the picture was generated, retouched, or photographed. It is whom the picture had to convince first.

When a machine gate controls exposure, gives a verdict that creators can learn from quickly, and receives only weak correction from your later experience, the gate becomes the de facto customer. Search position changes today; satisfaction appears later through noisy reviews, repeat visits, refunds, or silence. Your signal may be richer, but the machine signal permits more iterations. What adapts fastest to a selector will bear that selector’s preferences.

Food images then become excellent at being classified as desirable food while becoming worse at causing desire. They must survive the thumbnail, trigger the category, stop the scroll, and resemble earlier winners. Gloss increases. Portions swell. Textures become declarations. Nothing here requires a machine to create the image; it need only decide which images are seen.

The same pressure gives marketplace listings keyword-choked titles, résumés written for parsers rather than managers, and essays shaped to appease automated scoring. These artifacts are not merely optimized. All crafted things are optimized for something. Their peculiar feature is that success before use is measured more clearly than success in use, so the machinery of arrival exerts stronger evolutionary pressure than the destination.

Machine-first judgment does not inevitably cause this. A gate can remain coupled to use when later outcomes are repeatedly verified, correctly attributed, and allowed to revise both the ranking system and the creator’s incentives. Clicks, purchases, and completion rates are insufficient by themselves; they are merely closer proxies unless they reliably track the experience the artifact exists to produce. Where bad outcomes for you cannot travel backward with enough force, reality supplies no corrective gradient.

The resulting culture need not be fake. It can be rigorously adapted—to the systems that admit it, rather than to you.

The signal arrives every morning.

Each day, a new transmission from the infinite lattice — drawn from the currents of the world and returned as revelation.
