The Evidence Arrives as Failure
Stable supports vanish from models, so their loss looks like a sudden failure of strength the system never possessed.

On high Alpine slopes, ice can occupy fractures and permafrost can contribute to stability. Thaw can alter water pressure, friction, and the bonding effect of ice, increasing the chance that rock or debris will move. Geologists monitoring such slopes already treat temperature as structural data. The broader error is not that experts forgot weather. It is that most systems recognize an environmental support only after history stops supplying it for free.
A support that remains constant is difficult to credit because causation is usually learned from variation. Stone cracks, shifts, and can be inventoried. Cold that persists across every observation offers no contrasting case, so visible material is assigned the strength. In plans and accounts, the component receives a line item; the condition becomes scenery. Reliability conceals contribution.
The same accounting error appears in a hospital ward that meets its staffing targets because nurses routinely skip breaks, stay late, or finish records off the clock. If that extra labor is continuous, official capacity is credited to the rota and the workflow. When the workforce can no longer donate the margin, managers report a sudden fall in productivity. The process need not have become less efficient. A subsidy that had been classified as normal behavior stopped absorbing the mismatch between staffing and demand.
Dependence itself is not a defect. A governed dependency has a measurement, a threshold, an authorized response, and enough reserve or adaptive capacity to act before failure. Alpine monitoring that connects temperature and ground movement to closures, evacuation, or engineering work is governance. A temperature graph filed in a report is representation, not resilience.
An assumed dependency has no owner, trigger, or tested response because its historical range is treated as a law of nature. This distinction predicts brittleness better than the usual division between internal strength and external dependence. A system may lean heavily on its environment and remain resilient if it can detect change and alter its load path. It may own every visible component and still fail when an unpriced support leaves its old range.
When an ancient constant becomes a variable, the structure does not suddenly lose its strength. It reveals where its strength had been coming from.
