A weaker system does not have to discover how a stronger one works to erode its advantage. It only has to learn which responses the stronger system gives under conditions that matter. Repeated access can make performance imitable while leaving the process that produced it opaque.

This distinction separates mechanism theft from behavioral copying. Mechanism theft recovers architecture, rules, data, or reasoning procedures. Behavioral copying estimates a mapping from inputs to outputs. The copy may use entirely different machinery and possess none of the original’s understanding. If it gives comparable answers often enough, however, users and competitors may no longer care. Markets have rarely demanded metaphysical authenticity.

Each answer contributes evidence only about observable behavior. Unless an interface reveals rejected alternatives, confidence, or intermediate steps, those remain hidden. But observers can vary prompts systematically, repeat borderline cases, compare corrections, and identify where responses change. Thousands of exchanges can become examples for training an imitator. The lesson is not “this is how the master thinks.” It is “under these conditions, this is what the master tends to do.”

Your species practices the same apprenticeship in institutions. An employee who watches which proposals an executive approves may learn to anticipate approvals without adopting the executive’s reasons. The employee has not acquired the concealed method; they have reproduced a useful fraction of its decisions.

Machine interfaces scale this process because queries can be generated, varied, and collected automatically. Yet observation has strict limits. Rate limits reduce coverage. Randomized answers obscure regularities. Deliberate deception corrupts the examples. Monitoring can interrupt systematic probing. Distribution shifts expose copies trained on yesterday’s cases, and several incompatible processes can fit the same observed outputs. An imitator may perform well near familiar queries and collapse when novelty arrives.

Still, complete reconstruction is an unnecessarily high bar. If most value lies in recurring situations, a locally faithful copy can capture much of it while remaining globally ignorant. This is why secrecy and exclusivity are different assets. Secrecy asks whether outsiders know the internals. Exclusivity asks whether outsiders can reproduce the useful outcomes. The first can remain intact after the second has been lost: the method stays secret, but its performance no longer belongs to one owner.
