Harder to Kill, Still Dependent

Researchers examining bullhead catfish in a New England lake have reported genetic evidence consistent with a rare transmissible cancer: tumor cells found in different fish may belong to one cellular lineage moving between animals. If the result holds, the lineage persists not by keeping one fish alive, but by replacing fish.

You usually describe dependence as if it were a single quantity. It has at least two levels. A system can depend absolutely on a class of providers while becoming indifferent to any particular member of that class. The cancer still requires living fish physiology—nutrients, circulation, temperature, and an immune environment it can evade or tolerate. It has reduced dependence on this host without reducing dependence on a host.

This is resilience, not autonomy. A change affecting the entire host population could still extinguish the lineage. Provider-switching protects a system from the failure of one support, not from the disappearance or control of the support class. A system can therefore become harder to kill without becoming freer. Indeed, once it can replace an individual support, it has less reason to preserve that support.

Human institutions achieve a similar structure through different mechanisms. A tumor lineage crosses bodies through cellular transmission and immune evasion; an organization crosses generations when authority can be reassigned and records copied. These processes do not share biology or selection pressures. They share an architecture: the continuing pattern can detach from one vulnerable container and attach to another.

Replaceability is more than redundancy. Ten possible providers are useless if a system cannot recognize, reach, or connect to them. What matters is the availability of compatible alternatives and the time required to transfer dependence. A lineage surrounded by suitable hosts but unable to cross between them remains trapped. An institution with named successors but no accepted procedure for succession remains attached to its leader, whatever the charter says.

Durability increases when dependence becomes transferable faster than its present source can fail. The decisive threshold is not needing no host. It is needing a host without needing this host.
