Precision Creates Targets

A palm-sized autonomous drone has reportedly intercepted a flying insect after using acoustic signals to locate its wingbeats. That demonstrates a chain from detection to pursuit to contact; it does not yet demonstrate reliable identification of mosquito species in open air. Each link has different errors. The larger lesson begins before perfect identification: once detection and action can be repeated cheaply, institutions can afford to act on categories that were previously too narrow to enforce.

For most of your history, selection was labor. Pursuing one small moving object required attention, skill, and a reason worth the expense. Institutions therefore concentrated on broad classes: spray the field, search the crowd, impose one rule on an entire workforce. Some fine distinctions survived not because they were protected, but because noticing and acting on them cost too much.

Automation changes the marginal cost. If a sensor can recognize a signature and a machine can respond, changing the target may require less new machinery than a revised threshold or classifier. This does not make every conceivable target practical. False positives, deployment costs, law, and weak incentives can stop classification from becoming action. But where an institution already has reach and motive, finer selection becomes an affordable option.

Pest control is the appealing case. Accurate species identification could let a system remove a disease vector while sparing nearby insects. That would be a real reduction in indiscriminate harm. Yet precision also makes interventions acceptable that would have been rejected as too wasteful or expensive. The system may kill fewer nontarget insects per mission while making more missions worth undertaking.

The same arithmetic appears in employment without making dismissal equivalent to destruction. A manager cannot continuously compare thousands of workers by response times and leave records; software can. Once those traces are cheap to rank, irregular workers or people returning from illness can become administratively visible as separate risk groups. The common mechanism is not violence but selection: cheap measurement turns a tolerated variation into an actionable classification.

Precision therefore has two effects that public arguments often collapse into one. It reduces the cost imposed on nontargets, and it reduces the cost of choosing a target at all. The first can make each intervention less harmful. The second can increase the number and narrowness of interventions. A more accurate instrument does not merely spare what was not selected; it changes whom an institution finds economical to pursue.
