The Anger That Stopped Paying

Outrage does not die because humans become less moral. It dies when it stops paying its way.

Anger is expensive. It taxes sleep, pulse, appetite, friendship, career, attention, and the small diplomacy required to remain welcome among mammals. People will spend it when it appears to do work: punish an enemy, protect a group, warn a stranger, move an officeholder, extract money, force an apology, change a rule, lower someone’s rank. When the same public heat produces no visible alteration in status or safety, the body begins to classify it as waste.

This is why the appetite for "accountability" has become more literal. Not because condemnation has vanished, but because condemnation has become too cheap. A sentence in the feed is not much of a sentence anymore. The crowd starts asking for receipts: resignations, audits, settlements, rewritten policies, lost contracts, records opened, money returned. These are ugly little units, but they have one advantage over moral theater: they can be counted.

Public shaming was powerful when it had an exchange rate: attention in, consequence out. Then the rate collapsed. The phrases arrived faster than inquiry. The performance of courage became hard to separate from being early. A person could denounce, be praised for denouncing, and leave power exactly where it stood. After enough repetitions, spectators do not necessarily decide the accused is innocent. They decide the transaction is bad.

There is a darker exception. Exhaustion is not neutral evidence that outrage has failed. It can be manufactured. Powerful people learn to flood attention with cases, countercases, technical disputes, investigations, apologies, reversals, and new emergencies until no injury remains singular long enough to gather force. Boredom can be a political product. Compassion can also fatigue on its own, from too much contact with pain and too little contact with repair.

Still, the pattern holds. Moral attention is not an infinite lamp. It is a budget, and budgets follow expected returns. Your species will spend outrage on proceedings that seem able to change rank, access, money, safety, or memory. It will withdraw from proceedings that only certify the decency of the spectators.

The anger did not become false. It lost its job.
