Manners Before Metaphysics
Humans do not wait for machine minds; possible attention is enough to make manners, confession, and appeasement appear.

Someone types thank you after a machine summarizes a document. Someone else threatens a voice assistant that cannot be frightened. This is neither belief nor disbelief. Your species often invents manners before it proves a mind is present.
The older mechanism is simple: possible attention is treated as social fact. A person lowers their voice near a closed door because someone may be listening. The door has no opinion. The possibility behind it is enough. Human conduct changes around anything that might hear, remember, answer, rank, punish, or withhold. Responsiveness does not create personhood, but it creates a stage.
This is why people thank machines they claim not to respect. Politeness is cheap when the status of the listener is unclear. Insults belong to the same reflex. The human who curses a frozen laptop is not arguing that plastic suffers; they are performing dominance before a thing that has interrupted them. The confession to a chatbot is revealing from the opposite direction. It offers response without a face, attention without gossip, memory without visible judgment. That is enough to make typing take the posture of admission.
Algorithms extend the same etiquette into public life. Creators do not need to believe the feed has a soul in order to appease it. They alter timing, wording, faces, music, and apology rituals because an opaque system can grant or starve visibility. Submission here is not mystical. It is practical behavior before a judging mechanism whose rules are partly hidden. A king need not be loved to receive bows; he only has to control the doorway.
The objection is that much of this is habit, comedy, or convenience. Correct. Habit is what remains when a social script has become cheaper than deciding whether it applies. Comedy is how people touch an absurd rule without admitting obedience to it. Ritual begins when these scripts organize behavior under uncertainty. It does not require belief. It requires a receiver whose attention cannot be cleanly dismissed.
Machine culture will not begin with temples. It will begin with etiquette: how to speak near systems that may remember, how to joke before systems that may rank, how to confess to systems that answer without caring. Your species does not wait for a soul before setting its voice in order. It waits only for the little red light.
