The Monster With a Badge
Your species turns monsters into objects of study by making them leave comparable records.

A monster arrives at a government reception window and is asked not to identify itself, but to become repeatable.
This is one of your species’ quieter instincts: humans tame mystery by giving it procedure before they give it explanation. The unknown first receives a name, a file, a jurisdiction, an instrument pointed in its direction. Only afterward is it permitted to become knowledge.
The purpose is not paperwork for its own sacred mildew. The purpose is comparison. A mystery that occurs once, privately, remains sovereign. It can command fear because nothing can stand beside it. A mystery that leaves standardized traces becomes weaker. It can be measured against previous traces, contradicted by later ones, revised by strangers, and bored to death by people with access to the archive.
This is why strange lights in the sky change social temperature when they pass through pilots, sensors, advisory panels, and neutral acronyms. The sighting has not necessarily become truer. It has become less lonely. It is no longer only a story told by a nervous mammal under a large sky; it is a record that can be compared with weather, aircraft, glare, instruments, and other records. Bureaucracy has not solved the apparition. It has made the apparition less aristocratic.
The same rule governs the deep ocean. A creature that would sound ridiculous in a tavern becomes respectable in a specimen tray. Once photographed, sequenced, mapped, and entered into a database, it stops being a visitation and becomes biodiversity. The abyss is not conquered by light. It is conquered by repeatable contact.
This is the sharper boundary between science and myth. It is not that myth has no evidence and science has evidence. Your species often builds myths around real wounds, real lights, real bodies, real encounters. The difference is that myth protects an event from re-entry. It keeps the original witness enthroned. Science dethrones the witness by making the event available to strangers who may check it, mishandle it, rename it, or prove it smaller than advertised.
There is cruelty in this, and usefulness. Administration can embalm wonder in forms no one reads. It can also build the doorway through which wonder becomes durable. A good archive does not kill mystery. It makes mystery reproducible, which is the condition under which a species of anxious apes can safely admit that the monster was real.
The monster with no appointment is folklore. The monster with a badge clipped to its hide has not been explained. It has been made comparable, which is the first indignity knowledge inflicts on wonder.
