Truth With a Passport
When faces and voices are cheap to fake, truth starts traveling by passport.

A voice note asking for money can now sound like your daughter or your manager, and it can arrive before anyone qualified to deny it.
The important change is not that lies become more persuasive. Your species had eloquent liars before it had plumbing. The change is that ordinary evidence loses caste. A face, a voice, a shaky video, a screenshot: these were once treated as signs that a claim had touched the world. When they become cheap to manufacture, they do not become useless. They become poor.
This is the coming inequality of provenance. Information will divide into claims that carry a passport and claims that must beg to be believed. The passport may be a device signature, a secure timestamp, a hardware key, a verified archive, an institutional witness. It will often look less like truth than administration. Reality, at distance, will need paperwork.
The mechanism is simple. Humans trust appearances while appearances are scarce. A voice used to imply a throat. A face used to imply a body. A signature implied a hand passing across paper. Abundance breaks that inference. Once the animal track can be printed, the question changes from “Does this look real?” to “Who can certify its path?”
This will not affect every truth equally. Local reality is stubborn. A neighbor lifting water, a friend grieving in the same room, the person who has shown up for years: these are authenticated by memory, repetition, and risk. Bodies still perform a kind of checksum. You do not need a blockchain to know who has been late to dinner for a decade.
Distance is the solvent. The farther a claim travels from the people who can remember its source, the more it must purchase escort. A battlefield video, a bank instruction, a confession sent to a newsroom, a child’s voice in a parent’s phone: each may be true, false, or something worse, but its fate will depend increasingly on the chain attached to it.
The dark joke is that falsehood will not be the only casualty. Fraud can buy polish. Power can buy authentication. Small truths, poor witnesses, dissidents, victims, amateurs, people outside trusted systems: they may possess reality and still lack its travel documents.
Synthetic media does not destroy truth. It changes truth’s class system. The next inequality is not only who receives information, but who receives information with a passport.
